How it works

From practice meter to champion

The challenge is open only to attendees of the MRWS Annual Conference (March 23-25, 2027, Billings Hotel & Convention Center, Billings).

  2. Sign up for the challenge

Register online or come to the Zenner USA booth in the exhibit hall to register.

  3. Practice at home

You will be mailed a practice meter to put together before the contest. You do not have to return it to Zenner.

  4. Timed trials in the exhibit hall

Zenner hosts timed trials on the stage. You are timed twice; your best time is your time of record. The meter must be completely assembled and pass a leak and function test.

  5. The Sweet 16

The 16 best times go head-to-head in a single-elimination tournament after the banquet, until one champion is left. Third place is decided between the two semi-finalists who did not reach the final.

  6. On to the national challenge

First place automatically advances to NRWA's WaterPro Conference, for a chance to win a trip for two to Hawai'i in the national Ultimate Meter Challenge.

Rules and eligibility

The fine print

Who can enter?

Conference attendees who own or work at a utility (cities, municipalities, water districts and so on). You must be at the conference in person to compete.

MRWS staff and board members, their immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members are not eligible.

What exactly do competitors do?

This Competition is to test and measure individuals on how quickly, totally, and accurately they can assemble a working meter. All parts will be assembled to the diagram given, meter will be tested for leaks, meter will be disassembled to ensure it was assembled properly and no parts are missing.

This is a test of skill for individuals. To facilitate many competitors, we will be conducting a single elimination tournament, where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament . Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the Challenge Winner.

Each individual competitor will be required to completely assemble a water meter commonly utilized by water utilities for residential customers. The faster build with zero leaks in each match up will be the winner and move on to next bracket.

Each competitor will be furnished with a meter kit. This kit will contain a completely disassembled meter. In addition, random parts will be added to this kit. These random parts could/could not be related to the meter. Each kit will have the same extra parts, this will ensure that the competitor is thoroughly familiar with all parts of the meter he/she is assembling.

How long do I have?

A time period of no more than five (5) minutes shall be allowed for each competitor to complete his/her meter assembly.

How is a round won?

All parts are assembled to the diagram given, the meter is tested for leaks, then taken apart to check it was assembled properly and no parts are missing. In each match-up, the faster build with zero leaks wins and moves on to the next bracket.

Is there a flyer for 2027?
