Water Treatment & Distribution System Operator in Training
Hamilton, Montana
Position Description
This position is a full-time entry level position that performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled
duties in the operation, maintenance and construction of the water treatment, well stations,
booster pump stations, and water distribution system. This position works secondarily within
the Streets and Wastewater Departments. This position may also work within all other areas of
the Public Works Department as needed and assigned. Must exercise safety precautions in
dealing with hazardous conditions, chemicals, or materials. Maintains confidentiality of
sensitive information.
Community Profile
Located in the Bitterroot Valley, Hamilton is the county seat of Ravalli County and sits
approximately 45 miles south of Missoula Montana. With a population of around 5,000,
Hamilton has a small-town feel, but amenities to serve the surrounding population base of
around 20,000. Hamilton is home to two microbiological research and production facilities, the
NIAID/NIH run Rocky Mountain Laboratories and GlaxoSmithKlein. Hamilton is ideally located
for outdoor recreation, hunting, and fishing, minutes from the Bitterroot River which runs
through town, the Bitterroot Mountains to the west and Sapphire Mountains to the East.
The City of Hamilton employs 42 full time employees (FTE’s) with approximately 14 under
Public Works. The Public Works Department oversees the City’s Water, Wastewater, Streets,
and Building Department. The City operates and maintains approximately 43 miles of water
main and 20 miles of gravity sewer and has approximately 2,300 service connections. The
Water Department has 3 FTE’s that operate the City’s seven wells, two booster stations and the
City’s water distribution system.
Salary and Benefits
This position is being offered with a starting salary of $22.00 per hour or more dependent on
previous experience and education. Probationary wage will be 95% of offered wage and will
increase after completing a 6-month probationary period. Benefits include Employee Health
and Life Insurance, enrollment in the Montana Public Employee Retirement System (PERS), paid
vacation (15 days/year) and sick leave (12 days/year), and 10-11 paid Holidays per year. The
hours for this position will generally be 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.
