JOB DESCRIPTION:
Employees in this job operate and maintain the Highwood County Water and Sewer District public water supply system and wastewater treatment plant. This is an hourly wage position. Time and a half offered for emergencies call in situations.
JOB DUTIES, Operator will perform the following duties:
Operates and maintains wastewater treatment equipment, including pumps, conveyors, blowers, chlorinators, filters, aerators, UV disinfectant equipment, and other equipment.
Collects samples, prepares chemicals and performs routine tests for analyses of wastewater at various points in the treatment process per the direction of the DEQ Wastewater Permit. The DEQ wastewater permit is not up for personal interpretation. This includes but is not limited to: sequential effluent sampling, sequential influent sampling, ph, and temperature. This data is to be recorded in the operator daily log. Chlorine and bacteria samples are to be submitted for the public drinking water along with once every three-year test for lead and copper per DEQ regulations.
Samples are to be submitted under the appropriate permit number.

Reports sample data to the office secretary for submission to the DEQ via the netDMR system in a timely manner conducive to DEQ reports being submitted on time. This includes both monthly and quarterly reports.
Lubricates pumps, valves, and other parts. Repairs various equipment. UV disinfection system to plumbed in and running at all times. Cleans equipment and disposes of waste byproducts.
Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates to regulate the flow of wastewater through treatment processes. No constant discharging. Valve is either open for recorded and tested discharge, or closed and flow meter reading is at zero.
Reads and interprets charts, flow meters, and other gauges to determine operating efficiency.
Maintains logs, records, and reports related to the work. All repairs and sampling to be recorded in a log book. If work isn’t documented, no compensation will be provided.
Performs related work and other tasks as assigned. Communicates with board regularly about activities.
Maintains a timecard for hourly wage. Undocumented time will not be compensated.
Obtains estimates/quotes for any and all repairs to plant or equipment over $1,000.00. Board approval required prior to beginning work. This is per the Highwood County Water and Sewer District by-laws.
Starts and stops water service connections at the curb stops. No service is to be started without a user agreement and deposit submitted to the office.
All communication with WET and the DEQ will be first consulted with at least one board member.
Works from the designated water office. All correspondence, test kits, and supplies will be shipped to the water and sewer office. This includes letters, emails, and other forms of communication. No shipping items or communications to home residences. The office is there for work to be performed.
